Solar Technology Blooms in Dumaguete

This week we invited Dann Diez from Let's Do It Philippines to show our ladies the light through solared-power photovoltaic lamps.

Solar Lamp Workshop

We extend a heartfelt thanks to all of you who donated to enable this activity and the advantages it brings to our community.

During our soap-making workshop last year our crafters expressed how something as simple as extra light can improve their quality of life.  From simple tasks, such as making dinner in the evenings, rolling your paper beads, and assembling jewelry to enabling their kids to do school homework without straining their eyes or providing light during the far too frequent power outages here.  As the sun goes down around 5:30 to 6:00 pm daily, an entire evening can be spent in the dark.

With the instruction and guidance from Let's Do It Philippines' Dann Diez, the women were able to assemble the photovoltaic battery circuit connecting the energy-efficient LED light to the Solar panel.  There's nothing quite like that "aha" moment especially when followed by a bright light signifying a bright idea, finally realized!

This workshop usually takes more than a day to grasp all the electrical concepts needed to make a circuit, then assemble the incredibly tiny pieces together, but with the intricate skills of the Lumago Ladies, and the teamwork they've cultivated through years of collaboration, we were able to finish all the lamps in only 4 hours!

Reaching Out

This training not only benefits the Lumago ladies, but has a potential far-reaching impact in their community.  By training fellow community members and even extending to other communities, they can improve access to lighting for their homes and reduce their energy consumption and expenditures, making it an even more sustainable endeavor.  They can further develop their new skills as entrepreneurial ventures to design and produce functional and decorative lamps, spreading the light even further!

Why is Solar Energy important?

20180529_160805.jpg

Solar Energy is a clean and safe energy source for people and the environment. A day of sunlight can produce enough solar energy in one day to fuel the whole planet without all the detrimental aspects and risks to health and home of fossil fuel consumption.  The fact that it is a perpetual, renewable, and free energy source only makes its potential exponential to meet many of the challenges the world faces now and in the future. The cost-savings also makes it particularly beneficial for the poorest communities in the developing and developed world. We look forward to seeing and sharing that impact for the future of our community and many more! If you'd like to learn more about this training and its potential for your community,  please contact Let's Do It Philippines, or donate to Lumago so we can fund more solar lamp workshops across our city.

working towards Manila FAME!

In September we took time out of our normal designs for a few months to explore natural fibers.

We were lucky to have Designer PJ Aranador visit us in Dumaguete in August and helped us with some product development including this material so we could join Manila FAME, an exporters show under the wings of The Great Women's Project. A successful national project to help women entrepreneurs in the Philippines funded by the Canadian government.

After experimenting with the new product ideas of bowls and bottles, we decided to incorporate the natural fiber into what we know best: Jewelry!  We found this to so much fun and loved the rustic feel of the fiber. What do you think of our new designs?

weaving paper bead dresses for Francis Sollano

Meet FRANCIS SOLLANO, a Filipino designer and Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum, he's changing the way we define what is non-valuable garbage by transforming waste into something of new found value. Sharing his arts in major cities across the globe to spread awareness of our growing environmental issues and how 'Trashion' can be the solution. We are extremely honored to be working with him on one of his latest projects.

continuing to bead the change.....

As we continue to coordinate with our local retailers and consigners to refresh their inventory and ensure the women’s wares are available to find new homes in your jewelry collection our efforts to expand our market are important since the more we sell, the more we are able to provide meaningful work to the women.

Lumago Designs’ efforts always come back to the artisans and the community where they live and we were fortunate to be recognized for our efforts as a social enterprise in a nomination for the second consecutive year for the Design Social Enterprise Awards, an effort of Price Waterhouse Cooper to recognize social enterprises making a significant impact in the lives of Filipinos.  The awards ceremony will be at the end of May and we are honored to be considered among the many progressive organizations working to change the business and philanthropic environment here in the Philippines.

This comes on the heels of Fashion Revolution Week, a series of events around Manila aiming to spread awareness of the burden of fast fashion on the working poor and highlighted by a screening of The True Cost, a documentary film which makes a convincing case for sustainable fashion and how the unsustainable cycle of “fast fashion” has impacted the developing world.  In their coverage of the event, CNN Philippines mentioned Lumago Designs as an ambassador to this movement.  We are proud to continue our efforts to #beadthechange here in the Philippines and spread our story around the world, while at the same time humbled to see the great work and support of so many others around us working to make the world a better place.

CNN Philippines covered Fashion Revolution's jam-packed event showing "The True Cost" in Makati, Manila, and we're very honored to be mentioned as an ambassador to this movement! Check it out and watch the seminal film!

upcycled jewelry in England

Becky recently spent some time in England for a good friend’s wedding and was able to expand our offerings in the UK and prepare for the launch of our UK online shop.  She was also fortunate to meet with the people behind Fairmondo, a UK-based Fair Trade marketplace, and many other like-minded people at a social enterprise meetup in London.  Upon her return, she’s been working tirelessly to improve our website and finalize the UK and Philippines online stores before their launch at the end of May which we're all incredibly excited about!

Thanks to Fairmondo UK  for the opportunity to sell at the Triodos Bank Annual meeting today and to reach out to like minded individuals. It was an honour to finally meet the kind hearts behind the cooperative. Our UK followers can find Lumago jewelry online at https://fairmondo-uk.sharetribe.com/en/lumagodesigns

summer in Siargao

After a short trip to Siargao in Surigao del Norte this past March, we are happy to have three new retailers offering Lumago Designs products to their local market and visitors.  Check out our distributors listings and visit these stores for a great selection of our products if you’re in that part of the Philippines or planning a visit.

If you make it to Siargao Philippines this summer be sure to try some of brewed coffee, and check out our beautiful display at The Avocado Tree. We're very excited to be working alongside such advocates for local crafts and sustainable products. Here's the best little chill out spot at The Avocado Tree run by Stephanie Rochat in Siargao

We stumbled upon this gem of a store Felice Island in Siargao this week and they are another perfect host for our beautiful pieces! Along with other chemical free and locally made products they also offer workshops in all sorts of creative techniques to locals and tourists traveling through. The owner Jof is wonderful and passionate about the products she sells and almost immediately recognized our brand! Be sure to stop by if you're coming through.
