Eco Friendly Materials

Lumago Designs' signature element is the rolled paper bead, made from recycled paper.  We also use: pull tabs/ring pulls from cans which are made from pure aluminium; upcycled leather from secondhand bags and jackets sourced locally; upcycled clothing including scarves/t-shirts/leggings and cloth from bed sheets or sarongs; bamboo scraps; and plastic cut from discarded plastic bottles.  Everything is cleaned and sanitized before we upcycle it to ensure it is safe for our crafters and our customers.

Being eco friendly is not a trend for the Candau-ay community where the Lumago ladies live and work.  Recycling  is the community's main livelihood and reducing and re-using is a way of life. Several tonnes of trash are brought in everyday and residents intercept it before it reaches the dumpsite to find recyclable materials that can be reused or reimagined.  Whatever they find, they keep if they can reuse or sell as materials if they can't. For many members of this community, this is their main source of income.  By buying the materials we use from these scavengers, we are finding other ways to give back to the community since we can't employ them all.

In everything we do, we are always aiming to make our products and processes more sustainable.  We evaluate every material that goes into our products and are always looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint, help eliminate waste, and lessen the environmental impact that accompanies consumption locally and around the world.

Lumago reuses old leather from bags and jackets, it has to be genuine not just for the benefits of our customers but otherwise it just crumbles when cut! We purchase the leather from second hand stores across the city or sometimes we are lucky enough to receive donations.

All our pull-tabs/ring pulls are purchased from collectors at the local dumpsite or donated by local and international companies. They are all washed, bleached and polished to ensure you get the best looking up cycled pull-tabs in town.
